Accumulator bets explained: how football accas work

Published on September 27, 2026

Accumulators, or "accas", are among the most popular bets in Africa. The idea is exciting: a small stake could bring a big win. But accas also hide a major risk that many bettors underestimate. Here is how an accumulator works, how to calculate its odds, and what you need to know before placing one.

What is an accumulator?

An accumulator (also called a "multiple" or "acca") combines several predictions into a single bet. For example, you back a Morocco win, a draw between Burkina Faso and Benin, and a Nigeria win, all on the same ticket.

The golden rule: every single prediction must be correct for the accumulator to win. One wrong pick, and the whole bet is lost.

How to calculate accumulator odds

The odds of each selection are multiplied together.

Example with three matches:

  • Morocco to win: odds of 1.50
  • Algeria to win: odds of 1.80
  • Nigeria to win: odds of 2.00

Total odds: 1.50 × 1.80 × 2.00 = 5.40

If you stake ₦1,000, your potential return is 1,000 × 5.40 = ₦5,400, far more than each bet would pay on its own.

The catch: the risk rises fast

The odds climb so quickly because the probability of winning drops just as fast.

Using the same example, based on the odds, each team has roughly:

  • a 67% chance of winning for Morocco (odds of 1.50)
  • a 56% chance for Algeria (odds of 1.80)
  • a 50% chance for Nigeria (odds of 2.00)

For all three to win, the probability falls to about 19%, less than one chance in five. With five, ten or twenty matches on the same ticket, the chances of winning become very small, even if every match looks "easy".

That is why accumulators with huge odds rarely win.

Tips for a more sensible accumulator

  • Limit the number of selections: every extra match increases the risk.
  • Don't add a match just to boost the odds: every pick should be carefully considered.
  • Analyse each match: team form, absences, what is at stake. Our Today's tips can help.
  • Keep your stake small: never put money you cannot afford to lose on an accumulator.
  • Be wary of "sure accas" sold on social media: no accumulator is ever guaranteed.

Accumulator or single bet?

A single bet, on just one match, offers smaller returns but a much better chance of winning. An accumulator offers bigger potential returns, with far more risk. There is no right or wrong answer: what matters is understanding what you are betting on.
