Asian handicap explained: a simple football betting guide

Asian handicap is one of the most popular bet types among experienced bettors. But with numbers like -0.5, -1 or -0.75, it can look complicated at first. The good news: once you understand the principle, it becomes very logical. Here is how Asian handicap works, step by step, with simple examples.

The principle: removing the draw

In a classic 1X2 bet, there are three possible outcomes: win, draw or loss. Asian handicap removes the draw, leaving only two possible outcomes. To do this, the bookmaker gives one team a virtual advantage (or disadvantage), expressed in goals.

A negative handicap (for example -1) is given to the favourite: goals are taken away from its score.
A positive handicap (for example +1) is given to the underdog: goals are added to its score.

The bet is then settled on this "adjusted" score.

Handicap 0 (draw no bet)

This is the simplest case, also known as "draw no bet".

Example: you bet on Senegal handicap 0.

Senegal win: bet wins
Draw: stake refunded (a "push")
Senegal lose: bet loses

Half-goal handicaps: -0.5 and +0.5

The ".5" makes a draw impossible on the adjusted score, so there is never a refund.

Egypt -0.5: Egypt must win the match, by any margin. - Egypt win: bet wins - Draw or defeat: bet loses

Angola +0.5: Angola must win or draw. - Angola win or draw: bet wins - Angola lose: bet loses

Whole-goal handicaps: -1 and +1

With a whole-goal handicap, a refund becomes possible.

Example: Morocco -1 against Lesotho.

Morocco win by 2 goals or more (2-0, 3-1…): bet wins
Morocco win by exactly 1 goal (1-0, 2-1…): stake refunded
Draw or Morocco defeat: bet loses

On the other side, with Lesotho +1, you win if Lesotho win or draw, your stake is refunded if Lesotho lose by exactly 1 goal, and you lose if Lesotho lose by 2 goals or more.

The -1.5 handicap

Morocco -1.5: Morocco must win by at least 2 goals. No refund is possible. - Win by 2 goals or more: bet wins - Any other result: bet loses

Quarter-goal handicaps: -0.25 and -0.75

These are the most confusing. The principle: your stake is split in two, and each half is placed on the two neighbouring handicaps.

Handicap -0.25 = half on handicap 0, half on handicap -0.5.

Example: Ivory Coast -0.25 - Ivory Coast win: bet wins (both halves win) - Draw: half your stake is refunded, the other half is lost - Ivory Coast lose: bet loses

Handicap -0.75 = half on handicap -0.5, half on handicap -1.

Example: Nigeria -0.75 - Nigeria win by 2 goals or more: bet wins - Nigeria win by exactly 1 goal: half win (the half on -0.5 wins, the half on -1 is refunded) - Draw or defeat: bet loses

Handicap +0.25 = half on handicap 0, half on handicap +0.5. - The team wins: bet wins - Draw: half win (the half on +0.5 wins, the half on 0 is refunded) - The team loses: bet loses

Asian handicap or European handicap?

Don't confuse the two. A European handicap keeps three possible outcomes (win, draw or loss after the handicap is applied), with no refund. An Asian handicap has only two outcomes, sometimes with a full or partial refund. Always check which type of handicap you are betting on before confirming your bet.

Why use Asian handicap?

To get better odds on a strong favourite by asking it to win by a certain margin.
To protect yourself in case of a draw, thanks to refunds.
To back an underdog that can hold its own without necessarily winning.

As with every bet, no option is safe: Asian handicap does not reduce your overall risk, it simply spreads it differently.
